What is video localization?

Definition

Video localization is adapting a video for another language and market: translating the voiceover, captions and on-screen text, and adjusting examples, units and references so it feels native to local viewers.

Localization vs. translation

Translation changes the words. Localization also changes what doesn't fit the market: dates, currencies, examples and tone.

Subtitles or dubbing

Subtitles are cheaper; dubbing (translated voiceover) is better for tutorials, where viewers must watch the screen instead of reading.
