What is an explainer video?

Definition

An explainer video is a short video, usually 60 to 120 seconds, that explains what a product, service or idea is, what problem it solves and how it works. Common formats are animation, screen recordings of software, and presenter videos.

How explainer videos are used

Companies put explainer videos on homepages, landing pages and in sales emails to help a visitor understand the offer quickly. Internally, HR and operations teams use them to explain policies and processes.

Types of explainer video

The format depends on what you need to show.

  • Animated: illustrations or motion graphics, good for abstract ideas.
  • Screen-recorded: the real software in use, good for SaaS and internal tools.
  • Presenter: a person on camera, good for trust and personality.
  • Hybrid: a short animated hook followed by a product walkthrough.
