What is process documentation?

Definition

Process documentation is the written and visual record of how a recurring task is done: the steps, who performs them, the tools involved and the expected outcome. SOPs, runbooks and work instructions are all forms of it.

Why teams document processes

Documented processes survive employee turnover, make delegation and audits possible, and expose steps worth automating. Undocumented processes live in one person's head and break when they're away.

Video-first process documentation

The fastest capture method is recording the process while narrating it: the recording yields the video, the step-by-step article with screenshots, and the checklist, from one pass of the real work.
